Held annually since 1999 on the shores of Lake Opémisca in Chapais, the Festival du Doré Baie-James is the largest walleye fishing tournament in Quebec, welcoming over 1,000 anglers each year from across the province, and increasingly from beyond its borders. Over 10 days, anglers of all ages, families and friends gather for a full slate of activities and free concerts open to all.
The tournament is divided into two main categories. In the amateur division, which includes women's, youth and senior subcategories, most prizes are awarded by draw, giving every participant an equal shot at winning regardless of experience. On the professional side, the 2-day PRO-VIP competition challenges teams to accumulate points as strategically and quickly as possible, with a $15,000 prize for first place. Catch-and-release is mandatory for all tournament walleye, a concrete measure to preserve the exceptional fishing quality of Lake Opémisca for years to come.
