Eastmain still bears the historic name given to the mainland of the eastern shores of James Bay. In fact, the Hudson Bay Company referred to the whole eastern shores of James Bay and Hudson Bay as “East Main”.
Today, Eastmain is a growing community nestled along the south shores of the Eastmain river. Its modest size allows visitors to bask in a truly traditional Cree environment while having access to all the amenities of modern life.
What Eastmain lacks in population, as it is the smallest of the Cree communities, it more than makes up for with friendliness and hospitality. The people of Eastmain are warm and enjoy welcoming visitors.
