Among the most northern and wild in Quebec's network of wildlife reserves, Réserve faunique Assinica stretches north of Oujé-Bougoumou, carved by the powerful Broadback River and dotted with countless lakes across rugged terrain, as reflected in its Cree name, asinikaw, meaning "it is rocky."
Located in the Eeyou-Istchee territory, the reserve welcomes anglers, campers and canoeists in search of an authentic wilderness experience. Walleye, northern pike, lake trout and brook trout populate its waters, with lakes Comencho, Cachisca and Opataca among the most sought-after fishing destinations. Rustic camping is available at Lac Cachisca. Note that a weekly draw governs access to certain lakes.
